Juniors at the Velodrome

A group of youngsters from Southport Cycling Club had a chance to ride on Manchester’s world class velodrome last Sunday when they attended a British Cycling coaching programme. The session was designed to not only to improve their fitness but mainly to improve their close riding skills, a necessary requirement for both indoor track racing and circuit racing where riding in fast moving bunches forms much of the race action.

Norman Edwin Mosscrop 17-5-26  to 21-4-2011

Southport Cycling Club is sad to report the death of Norman Mosscrop on Thursday 21 April 2011 in Southport DGH age 84 years. Norman had been ill for a few weeks and had had a couple of spells in hospital this year. Although Norman had a bad accident in Dumfries just before his 80th birthday, which left him partially paralysed with damage to his neck on admission to hospital, he made a remarkable recovery, well enough to get back into the shop. He used to walk to the shop from his house in Churchtown. He was a member of Southport Cycling Club for over 50 years and was elected a life member in 2006. Never really  a racing man, Norman enjoyed touring and camping weekends in the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales with his many friends. Norman lived in the town all his life and went to school at Norwood Road and KGV. He volunteered for the RAF in the war but ended up as a Bevin Boy working in the mines in the North East near Durham. He worked at Dick Kerrs on the old dock road in Preston for a few years. In 1953 he bought the cycle shop on Bispham Road which he ran for 50 years before passing it over to his son Gary. He was a good friend to all and was ever helpful to anybody who called in his shop. The Funeral is at Southport Crematorium next Tuesday 3rd May 2011 at 15-00hrs.

Bickerstaffe Winter Duathlon Series

Flying a frosty winter flag in minus 2 degrees at the beginning of December (just before the heavy snow) were Sue and Richard Cary. The event is run, bike, run (3miles, 10 miles, 3 miles). Next one this coming weekend (9th January), and the last in the series in February. The cake van at the finish is a popular feature to this well-organised event. I think Sue looks like she's enjoying herself too much. (Richard Cary)

Allan Taylor gets a "ribbing"

Tuesday 16th August saw Allan Taylor and Neil (from Scotland) set off from the Plough in the rain. A change to the normal route saw them heading on Shore Road at a good pace. A moment of inattention, a tangle of handlebars and Allan hit the deck!!! A call to "International Rescue" (his wife Sheena) had him rescued and off to A & E in 20 minutes. Triage and a couple of x-rays revealed 4 posterior broken ribs and broken right collar bone. A night in hospital followed. Now back at home anticipating 6 weeks off the bike. It only hurts when you laugh!!!

Bishop's Castle Tandem Triathlon

On Saturday 2 July Sue and I (Richard Cary)completed Costley Bankthis unique variation on a triathlon. One person has to complete the 1000m swim (fortunately for me, this was Sue), then hop on the tandem for a hilly 21mile circuit around Shropshire. It includes a two ascents of a nasty 1-mile 10% clmb. At the end of the second climb (seen here in its closing off-road 20% bit) the other partner (me, in this case) dismounts to complete a brutal 10k fell run (over the top of Bury Ditches) before getting back on the tandem for a final 4-mile dash back to event HQ. For the third consecutive year Sue and I finished 11th overall and second Mixed Vets team. (Click to enlarge the picture)

Lanequest Series of Rides in Lake District.

From Neil Thomson - I thought that some club members might find this series of events interesting. I have taken part in this Lanequest Series for the last 3 years and found them great fun. They are all in South Lakeland on Tuesday evenings in June and July. The events are basicly Orienteering on bikes along quiet lanes in South Cumbria, and many club riders take part. For anyone who enjoys mapreading and cycling it is a good night out. The downside is that most of them are about an hour and a half away. Regards Neill Thompson -- SSC Member. Update -Talk and Demonstration by Paramedic Steve Evans at the Club room Monday 7th March

Thanks go to Steve Evans, the cycling paramedic, who gave a very informative talk and demo at the clubrooms on March 7th, on how to deal with accidents and treat injuries mainly sustained by cyclists.

The presentation was interesting (witty at times) and I'm sure club members gained a lot of useful knowledge from the talk.

Steve has left handouts at the clubrooms for those who missed the evening. _ Margaret Sims,

Peter Gawthorne

Peter got out of the hospital on Monday late in the afternoon. The break was a bad one and needed to be pinned. Peter suffered from a reaction to the anaesthetic which delayed his release. He will not be able to go to the dinner on Friday. He says thanks to all for their good wishes. He will now have time to master his new GPS device!

Following the accident Peter suffered during the Eureka Audax (see separate report on the Audax page) Peter has had to have his collar bone pinned. He went into hospital on Friday (19 Nov) and had hoped to be out the same day. It now appears that he will not be out of hospital till Sunday at the earliest. Further updates to follow.

Spencer is back on his bike. His hand is still sore and has a support and bandages which are to be removed next week. He was lucky to miss further injury when the Saturday ride from the Plough was passing through Banks. There was a large group and Spencer, who was riding at the back of the group, was caught out with several others when the group suddenly slowed with no warning shouts.
