Terry's 80th Birthday Ride

Tuesday 9th July saw long time Southport Cycling Club member, Terry Seanor celebrating his 80th Birthday. In true style he chose to mark the day as he has done his previous birthdays since joining the club following his retirement, by riding the mileage of his age. In this case it was an 80 mile ride to Knott End Nr Fleetwood and back, with ten of his closest clubmates.

Terry only took up cycling at the age of 63 after successful sporting careers as firstly an athlete and then a windsurfer. He competed as a Time Trialler but found most pleasure in riding the longer distance events known as “Audaxing”, riding distances of 125 miles, 180 miles, 250 miles and 360 miles. He was a frequent participant in the Southport-Scarborough-Southport and Preston- Edinburgh-Preston rides and has been an inspiration to many much younger riders in the club with his exploits. A few short years ago he was the oldest rider in the 125mile Mons Audax event organised by Southport’s twin cycling club in Belgium, which he completed in between riding the 90 mile journeys to and from Mons from the port of Zeebrugge and is also famed as never one to take a short cut to anywhere.

Despite some recent health issues which had slowed him down for a while Terry was determined to celebrate his birthday in his inimitable manner and kept up a good pace throughout the day. He was rewarded with fabulous sunny weather and the cyclist’s best friend, no wind, to Knott End where he enjoyed a birthday lunch including cake and was presented with cards and a gift from his club mates. Everyone agreed it was the best ride of this and possibly many a year. Terry’s final words to those present were to prepare themselves for next year as he has already mapped out an 81 mile route to Glasson Dock for 2014.
