Going the distance - Mid Shrops 50 (13th May)

Stepping up for the bigger mileages at the weekend were Dan Burdekin and Richard Cary.

Yet another chilly morning and, for the exposed avenues of this course, a rising westerly wind that troubled riders almost all the way. Although somewhat flatter than the Circuit of the Dales I'd have to say this felt harder, perhaps by virtue of being essentially stuck in the same riding position for such a long time. Dan got off to a quick start but found himself falling prey to the winds, and finished, disappointed by his standards, in 2:30:23. Richard finished in 2:17:18. I too was disappointed, but given that my legs were exploding at the end and clearly had nothing more to give, perhaps I shouldn't be.

Event winner was Andy Bason, Team Revolution in a stunning 1:46:39, clear water separating him from local hero, Simon Rushton, Phoenix CC (Aintree) 1:52:07 who in turn was almost 6 minutes clear of the third place rider. Just 5 riders tucked inside the 2-hour barrier, a testament to the tough conditions.
