Sunday 11th March saw the second CDNW league event at Saighton near Chester. The weather was overcast and mild with limited sunshine. Once again Southport CC had 3 riders competing in this race with Spencer Coltman, Steve Duffell & Josh Townson. The race consisted of 7 laps of a 6.94 mile circuit, combining to make a total race distance of 48.58 miles. The course profile is mainly flat except of a short incline near to the finish.

After a warm-up ride and a rider briefing, at 10:00, all of the riders lined up outside race headquarters ready to start the race. The E/1/2 category race consisting of 56 riders started their 62 mile race followed 2 minutes later by 58 eager 3/4 category riders. As expected, there was attack after attack with quite a few riders trying their luck to establish a break away early on. Most of the attacks were chased down instantly and easily caught. However, one break-away group managed to stay Thumb.jpg) clear of the main bunch until the last lap when it was inevitably eventually caught just before the sprint opened up. On the last lap, the pace picked up to 25.9mph with a maximum speed of 36.3mph. As the sprint opened up coming around the last corner, the incline began to take its toll, but, soon enough all the riders had crossed the finish line.
The win went to Neil Robinson of Lune RCC. I (Josh Townson) finished in 22nd position, followed closely by Spencer who finished in 28th position out of 58 riders. Steve Duffel finished in 38th position.
Thumb.jpg) My Garmin showed that I had covered 48.58 miles in 1 Hour 57 Minutes at an average speed of 25.0mph. I (Josh Townson) learned from my mistakes from last week’s racing and improved my positioning within the bunch. I’m sure the season can only get better!
Another good race despite the fact that some riders decided it was acceptable to ride dangerously by consistently riding on the wrong side of the road. Thankfully, 4 of these riders were disqualified by CDNW. The next event is the 81km 2nd/3rd/4th category Merseyside Wheelers Road Race at Pimbo Industrial Estate on Sunday 25th March.
