CDNW Pimbo Sunday 8th July saw the tenth CDNW league event at Pimbo Industrial Estate.

The thought of 24 repetitive laps of the 2.11 mile Pimbo Industrial Estate race circuit wasn't at all appealing. So, I was quite glad when the race was shortened to 20 laps. The weather was ideal with cloud, sun & low wind speeds. All of Southport CC's junior riders took part in this event with myself, Clayton Howard & Mark Mcgavock; along with Spencer Coltman.

The race was 20 laps of a 2.11 mile circuit, making a total race distance of 42.2 miles. I was up at 09:00 and had decided the night before that I would ride the short 12 mile route out to race headquarters as a warm-up with Matt Burdekin from Cover Your Car RT & his brother Dan. After signing on and a short warm-up ride to Pimbo Industrial Estate, it was time to race. My aim was to work, chase and attack throughout the race in the hope that I would succeed in being part of a breakaway. By doing this, I would become stronger in the long-term despite the fact that I knew I would be running the risk of not having enough energy left for the end of the race in order to have a strong finish in this particular race.

Pimbo is one of those races where people turn up, sit in for the whole race and then come to the front on the last lap. Nothing wrong with that but it is called a 'race' for a reason. 55 riders lined up on the start line and as expected, right from the start of the race, there was attack after attack with quite a few riders trying their luck to establish a break away. Most of the attacks were chased down and easily caught. However, one break-away group managed to stay clear of the main bunch. I was pleased to see Mark Mcgavock was in this break. This resulted in myself, Spencer & Clayton moving up to the front of the peloton to slow everybody down. It worked well with Mark placing 5th overall. On the last lap, the pace picked up to around 28mph. Coming around the last corner, the sprint started to open up. With everyone in their biggest gear we all hammered it to the finish line.

The well-deserved win went to Lee Carter of Ribble Valley CRC who was part of the breakaway. I finished 29th out of 55 riders, followed closely by Clayton in 32nd position; with Spencer finishing in 21st position. I was not too pleased with my position but I did a lot of work, chasing and attacking compared to other riders which hopefully will pay off later on in the season. My Garmin showed that I had covered 42 miles in 1 Hour 34 Minutes at an average speed of 27.1mph - Fastest race of 2012 so far! It just shows how we all get stronger throughout the season as the CDNW Pimbo race in March had an average speed of only 24.5mph.

After a quick rest, I was back on the bike in order to ride back to race headquarters. After a short stop at race headquarters, I slowly rode 12 miles home. Having rode 65.63 miles at 21.7mph, it was safe to say it had been a good day on the bike! Good job Southport CC :-) CDNW Pimbo Results
