Merseyside Wheelers Road Race at Pimbo - 25th MarchThe thought of 24 repetitive laps of the 2.11 mile Pimbo Industrial Estate race circuit wasn't at all appealing. Despite this, 80 2nd, 3rd and 4th category riders lined up for the start of the Merseyside Wheelers Road Race on Sunday 25th March. The weather was more than ideal with sun & low wind speeds. Once again Southport CC had 3 riders competing in this race with Spencer Coltman, Steve Duffell & Myself. Right from the start of the race, there was attack after attack with quite a few riders trying their luck to establish a break away during the early stages of the race. Most of the attacks were chased down and easily caught. Anyway with the peloton working on the front to bring back numerous break away, everyone decided to let one break go and the pace calmed down. However the group only managed to stay clear of the main bunch until the last lap when it was inevitably eventually caught just before the sprint opened up. . On the last lap, the pace picked up to around 29mph. Coming around the last corner, the sprint started to open up. With everyone in their biggest gear we all hammered it to the finish line. The well-deserved win went to Lee Tunnicliffe of Clay Cross RT. I finished 18th out of 80 riders, with Spencer finishing in 8th position & Steve Duffel who finished in 43rd position. My Garmin showed that I had covered 50.52 miles in 1 Hour 56 Minutes at an average speed of 26.1mph.
