Sunday 4th March saw the first CDNW league event at Pimbo Industrial Estate. The weather didn't look promising, with high winds and rain looking likely. Luckily, throughout the race, the weather improved, which was welcomed by all the riders.

Southport CC had 3 riders competing in this race with Spencer Coltman, Steve Duffell & Myself (Josh Townson). The race was 20 laps of a 2.11 mile circuit, making a total race distance of 42.2 miles. 80 riders lined up on the start line and as expected, right from the start of the race, there was attack after

attack with quite a few riders trying their luck to establish a break away, with John Findley of Bill Nickson Cycles RT making a very strong effort to go solo. However, as there was a strong headwind on the final straight, it was almost impossible for a break away to stay away from the peloton.

On the last lap, the pace picked up to around 32mph. Coming around the last corner, the sprint started to open up. Unfortunately, at 200 metres to go, there was a touch of wheels and a few riders crashed including Steve Duffell. Fortunately, most of the riders that crashed landed on the grass verge. The win went to Tom Dalton of Bill Nickson Cycles RT. Spencer finished 9th & I (Josh Townson) rolled in with the main bunch and finished in 50th position. John Findley finished in 59th position.

With having raced at the Eddie Soens Memorial Race the day before, some of the riders already had fatigued legs, including myself, who didn't have anything left for the sprint. It was my first junior weekend of racing, and it was a hard, yet enjoyable weekend of racing to be sure. A big step up from youth racing last year, but, Spencer & Steve looked after me throughout the race and would like to thank them for that. I'm sure the season can only get better!

My Garmin showed that I had covered 42 miles in 1 Hour 43 Minutes at an average speed of 24.5mph. (To see the output from Josh's Garmin click here) Next Sunday, there is another CDNW event at Saighton. Spencer Coltman, Steve Duffell & Myself (Josh Townson) will be representing Southport CC in the 85 kilometre ¾ category race.
