Race report -Easter Sunday 24th April 2011

Easter Sunday saw the Frank Morgan Memorial road race take place at Kirkby.

Open to 2nd, 3rd and 4th cat riders,normally a very fast race on wide roads around Kirkby Industrial estate. Southport CC had four riders competing, Spencer Coltman, Simon Deeley, Steve Duffel and Martin Phillips.

On a beautiful morning the race set off at its usual fast pace, lots of attempts being made to establish a breakaway. Eventually a 3 man break went away, and although towards the last 5 miles it looked like we might catch them , they indeed managed to stay away, leaving us riders left in the bunch preparing for the sprint.

With half a lap to go Martin hatched a plan, trying to use his head ,because his legs dont work like they used to. He decided to try and locate Phil Thomas's rear wheel in readyness for the 70 up sprint, but watched in vain as Phil moved up the field on the opposite side of the bunch. Plan B to sprint in with everyone else seemed the sensible option.

All 4 SCC riders finished safely in the bunch, Spencer being our best finisher.
