Eureka - Magnificent 6 + 1 get Spencer's idea eventually

The morning of the 4th november was cold and with a slight frost. At 8.55. am outside Ainsdale police station a small group had gathered for the start at 9.00.am. Compared to last years turnout with more than 20 riders ,only six Southport riders had braved the cold.

Spencer Coltman was debating whether he would be able to get back to Tarleton lights in time to join up with the normal Sunday crew, but decided instead to take the trip to the Wirral. So off we went, Mark Davies, Will White, Ray Lyon, Lennie Collins and Allan Taylor with Spence leading the bunch. Just before the start of the Formby by-pass we were joined by Keith Miller making his annual guest appearance for the jaunt through the Tunnel.

On the Formby by-pass the light frost on the cycle path ment that we rode on the main carriageway with Spence setting a hard pace (he said he neede to get warm after waiting).. This continued through Ince Woods and on in to Crosby. "Knock a mile off Spence" was the cry on numerous occasions.

Arriving at the Mersey Tunnel entrance we paused for a photo opportunity and for some to recover from the effort so far. Lights on and into the Tunnel. Regroup at the exit and then Spence was off again with the line of riders stretching and breaking on several occasions. the lanes had cleared of frost by this time so we sped on acrioss the Wirral eventually arriving at the Eureka just after 11.00.am.
