Greg and Maxine Callaghan at the Giro d’Italia in IrelandWe recently took a trip to Belfast to see the start of Giro d'Italia. Flying out on the Friday meant that we were able to catch the Team Time Trial on the first day. The start for the TTT was at Titanic Belfast – using the very slip way from which the famous liner was launched. The TTT gave thousands of fans the opportunity to see all their heroes up close and personal. Maxine was amazed at how close you could get to the riders in the “pits”. All the teams bar two had state of the art tour buses and back up vehicles. We were so involved in the whole spectacle that we wandered a little too far into the Trek Factory pits and were asked to leave, politely of course.The weather was changeable which made the TTT interesting as Dan Martin found out. The following morning we saw off the Peloton in the rain, before watching the finish just yards from our hotel. The City of Belfast and all of Northern Ireland really pulled out all the stops to welcome the Grand Tour. If it didn’t move ,it was painted pink.!! GREG CALLAGHAN |
